SPOONER– The Spooner/Shell Lake Rails boys soccer team has completed a highly successful soccer season, and this week they will advance to the WIAA Division 3 playoffs.

The Rails placed second in the competitive Heart O' North Conference with a record of 9-1-2, 12-1-3 in all games.


On Saturday, Oct. 9, the Rails took a 4-0 victory in Osceola.

Scoring goals for Spooner/Shell Lake were Landon Deneen (2), Ezra Walt (1), and Kolton Frederickson (1).

Ezra Walt and Henry Schmitz each had assists in the game.

In goal, Dominic Ricci played 80 minutes in the shutout effort.

On Thursday, Oct. 12, in Unity, the Rails suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Unity/St. Croix Falls by the score of 2-1.

Landon Deneen registered Spooner/Shell Lake's, unassisted.

With the loss by the Rails, the champions of the HON Conference this year were Washburn/Bayfield, with a record of 9-0-3, 12-1-3 overall.


The Spooner/Shell Lake Rails, coached by Nick Merdt, will now regroup and get ready for the opening round of the WIAA Division 3 Regional playoffs.

The Rails will get the chance to do it at home when they host St. Croix Central (2-7-1) under the lights at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Spooner field.
