Man charged with possessing child pornography

A Hayward man has been charged by Sawyer County authorities with possessing images of child pornography at his residence June 21.

Edeward Daniel Precht, 57, 9444 Hwy. 27, Hayward, is charged with three counts of possessing child pornography.

According to the criminal complaint, a Sawyer County sheriff's officer was notified by the state Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Internet Crimes against Children task force of child pornography being downloaded in Sawyer County. The downloads were flagged by Google, and the DCI subpoenaed Charter Communications to provide the identification numbers of which internet protocol devices were used to download the pornography.

On June 21, DCI agents and Sawyer County officers executed a search warrant at Precht's residence, vehicle and person. They seized two cell phones, a Samsung tablet and a pill bottle containing suspected marijuana.

Precht told them he never has kids in the house and has not sexually touched any child. He said he has been married and divorced twice, has three adult children, and that his loneliness drove him to do something he didn't want to do.

Precht was placed on a $5,000 cash bond with orders to have no contact with minors, and not to possess or use any electronic devices that can connect with the internet. He made his initial court appearance June 29 and a preliminary hearing is set for July 8.
