Playing tough softball

Defending a bunt, Spooner Rail catcher Camryn Dezek and third baseman Kara Romportl make a play as the Rails beat Colfax 2-1. Spooner plays the second round of the Division 3 Regional in Bloomer at 5 p.m. today, May 23.

SPOONER– In the opening round of the WIAA Division 3 Regional playoffs, the Spooner Rails softball team hosted Colfax, earning a hard fought 2-1 victory.

Following two scoreless innings, the Rails got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when batter Alexis Robotka smashed a triple, scoring base runner Emily Romportl to put Spooner in front 1-0.

Colfax played tough, however, and came back to tie the game 1-1 with a run in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kenna Erickson singled to get on base for Spooner. The next batter popped out first the first out. On an overthrow, Erickson was able to race to third base after stealing second.

The scoring threat looked in trouble as the next batter made the second out with the runner still stranded on third. Senior captain Rikki Saletri, though, belted a single to drive home Erickson and give the Rails a 2-1 lead after five innings.

Behind the steady pitching of freshman Emily Romportl, the Rail defense was able to hold off any comeback from the Vikings, winning the contest 2-1.

Spooner will now travel to Bloomer for the second round of the D3 Regional on Thursday, May 23 at 5 p.m.
