Larry Samson (left) of the Washburn County Register and Bill Thornley often covered events together in the area.

Last week it was announced that after 131 years the Washburn County Register, based in Shell Lake, would cease publication on September 30 due to “a growing financial burden which has been accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic.”

The news was like a punch in the gut. It is tragic, especially for the people in the Shell Lake area, which the Register has served since 1889, pre-dating the Spooner Advocate, which first began publication in 1901.
