SPOONER– She’s a delicate looking little thing, really, small in stature and feminine in every way.
Gabrielle Skidmore, maybe better known as Gabby, is a sweet, 95-pound, soft-voiced, petite blonde Spooner Middle School 8th grader … and if you get her on the wrestling mat she more than likely will whip you good!
“I’ve been wrestling for nine years,” she said.
She credits her father, Bill, and two older brothers, Morgan and Isaiah, for helping to direct her to the wrestling mat. Bill has a long history of competition in the martial arts. Morgan was a successful Spooner Rail wrestler, and Isaiah, a freshman, is also experiencing success in the sport of high school wrestling.
But it is Gabby who so far is turning out to be a hugely successful wrestler as a girl.
“She is just doing great,” said her mother, Shannon. “She intends to wrestle next year as a freshman and is training now. She has been doing very well. She says her wrestling team is like her family and they all support and encourage her.”
This past week Gabby brought home her fourth consecutive State wrestling championship from competition at the Youth State Tournament in Madison. It is her sixth State trophy since third grade.
Also wrestling at the Youth State Tournament were teammates, Garett Borelli, Joshua Carroll, Brett Jepson and Chase Melton. The team was coached by Andrew Melton and Steven Daniels.
Gabby competes in the 95 lb. weight class. She wrestles both boys and girls, and is planning on wrestling next year.
“My friends all congratulated me,” she said. “I had a lot of support from my parents and coaches. I’m doing a lot of spring training.”
