A Spooner High School student was injured in a collision between a propane truck and car on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 12.
Three vehicles had converged at the intersection of Cty. Hwy. K and A in the town of Spooner. According to the report from the Washburn County Sheriff's Office, the Superior Fuel Company propane truck, driven by Shannon C. Fout, 59, of Stone Lake, was heading south on Cty. Hwy. K and two vehicles were heading east on Cty. Hwy. A, toward Hwy. K. The first pulled out into the truck's lane, causing the driver to brake and begin to slow. The second, which had just left Spooner High School, reportedly did not stop at the stop sign and also pulled out into the truck's lane and was broadsided on the driver's side by the truck.
Fout estimated that he had been going approximately 45 mph, and the impact spun the sedan around 180 degrees and send it into the ditch backwards, into a tree. The 16-year-old driver was trapped in the car and was extricated and taken to Spooner Health.
The report said that the sedan's driver told her mother and deputies that “she was checking her schedule at the time of the crash. She had looked but did not see the propane truck.”
"We were very sorry to learn that a Spooner High School student had been injured in an accident after school on Tuesday," said Dave Aslyn, Spooner Area School District administrator. "Thoughts, hopes and prayers from all across the District go out to her and her family. We send our best wishes for her complete and speedy recovery. She is missed by her friends and the school staff and we look forward to her return."
