SPOONER– Do you have a child age 10-14? Are you or your youths feeling misunderstood or disrespected at times? Have you wondered about whether they are making good choices when you are not around? Do you find yourself wondering what you could do differently as a parent?
The Mindfulness-Enhanced Strengthening Families Program is for parents and their youth ages 10 to 14 and is proven to increase positive family relationships and lower rates of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use in youths throughout their high school years. It runs from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. on seven Thursday nights from October 3 through November 21 at the Lakeland Family Resource Center in Spooner.
All families are invited, including single-parent, two-parent, foster, adopted, blended, step-parents or grandparents, etc.
The high-quality program is designed for families who want to do as well as possible during the tough transition years from childhood to older teen and beyond. At the program, families will:
> Enjoy learning more about each other.
> Practice positive communication and coping skills.
> Discuss setting and keeping healthy rules.
> Manage stress and conflict.
> Learn useful, tested tools for supporting each other.
Parents who did the program before reported that relationships with their children improved and their children cooperated better, among other benefits. Youths have said how much they appreciate the time spent with their parents, and the amazing things they learned.
University of Wisconsin-Extension, Community Alliance for Prevention, and Lakeland Family Resource Center are hosting the enhanced program, which includes practicing being more present and calm with each other as family members – something families have been asking for.
The Mindfulness-Enhanced Strengthening Families Program 10-14 is one of the most proven, effective family programs in the United States. It is highly recommended by families and family educators. More information is at fyi.uwex.edu/strengthening-families/.
Free, quality childcare will be provided for children under 10. A free family meal is served each week to make it easier on families’ busy schedules.
The program is made possible with state and county funding.
