MINONG– Three families were displaced and their belongings lost on Thursday, Aug. 16, when a fire destroyed a single-level four-plex of the Edgewater Apartments. Two of the families were home at the time and escaped without injuries. One apartment was vacant.
Minong Fire Chief Jay Barrett said the cause is under investigation, and arson is not suspected.
The page for the fire went out at 2:42 in the afternoon, and two of the apartments were blazing when the Minong Area Fire Department arrived. The Chicog, Wascott, and Gordon departments were called for mutual aid. Approximately 30 firefighters handled the blaze and aftermath, with the assisting departments on-scene until about 5 p.m. and Minong finishing at 6:30 p.m. Emergency medical technicians were on hand, too, in case they were needed.
Some of the firefighters salvaged some of the belongings for the families once the fire was out, Barrett said.
