TOWN OF BASHAW– Sandra H. Atkinson, 74, of Shell Lake was seriously injured when her car was rear-ended in an accident on Saturday afternoon, June 1.
Atkinson was stopped on Hwy. 63, waiting for the southbound traffic to pass so she could turn left onto Fox Trail Road, according to the report from the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office.
Steven M. Becker, 54, of Ellsworth also was driving north on Hwy. 63. He said he checked his pickup’s mirrors, and when he looked up, he did not see brake lights on Atkinson’s car and realized he would run into it. He said he braked but struck the car, forcing it into the ditch on the east side.
Atkinson reportedly sustained a brain injury and was airlifted to Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. A passenger, her husband, Jimmy Atkinson, 84, was taken to Indianhead Medical Center in Shell Lake for his injuries.
The accident crushed the rear and both side rears of Atkinson’s car. The accident report noted that the car’s airbags did not deploy.
Becker had no apparent injuries, and his truck’s front end was damaged. He was cited for inattentive driving.
The lanes were closed for approximately 45 minutes while law enforcement and emergency personnel were at the scene.
