SPOONER– “This is exciting news,” exclaimed Dennis Canfield, recently moved to Spooner from Buffalo, New York.
Canfield is the brand new owner of the Spooner Civic Center, formerly known as the Spooner Ice House. A hockey man, Canfield has a new junior hockey team that he will be bringing to the arena next fall, but he also says that the Civic Center will not be entirely about hockey.
He has done a lot of homework on the civic center and plans to make many upgrades as are needed, including making the building much more energy efficient with new technology.
“An important message to the community is we’re not looking back,” said Canfield. We can’t change the past. But we’ve got a long-term plan that takes us where we want to go. I see this facility as the life blood of this community, a lifeline to continued economic success.”
Canfield is not going it alone. He is backed up by a network of some of the finest in the business.
“I’m good at hockey, I’m good at business,” he said. “What I don’t know, I surround myself with people who do. We came into town and did research. I listened, I asked. All of this has led to excitement about what the future is going to be. We know this needs to be more than hockey. We want Whitetails Unlimited here, we want shows, concerts, meetings. We’re willing to listen to what people want.”
