Tri-County Dairy Breakfast12.jpg

About 40 years ago dairy breakfasts began to be hosted on dairy farms in many counties in Wisconsin. This idea was promoted by the dairy farmers of America’s Dairyland. Local committees were developed and in 1981 Washburn County held its first dairy breakfast.

Don and Charlotte Furchtenicht, their daughter Cheryl and her husband Greg Odden hosted that breakfast in 1981. This was held on their farm between Shell Lake and Spooner in conjunction with a TwiLight meeting for 4-H dairy exhibitors – 550 people attended and it was very successful.

Other dairy farmers volunteered to host a dairy breakfast, and the number of people attending continued to rise. Records show that 2,000 people were served when Steve and Linda Degner hosted in 1991. In 2000 a disease scare moved the dairy breakfast to the Washburn County Fairgrounds where it has been held since then.

This year’s all-you-can- eat breakfast will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. This popular event draws huge crowds – lately about 1,700 people are served each breakfast. The wonderful food featuring pancakes, sausage, cheese, milk, butter, maple syrup, and honey butter sends everyone away full. A hayride, barrel train, baby farm animals, face painting, kiddie barn, FFA activity, and live music by Tommy Ray makes for a fun family event. Free ice cream cones top off the scrumptious breakfast.

For the 39th Dairy Breakfast, a special parking area will be marked off for handicapped drivers. A special section is provided for handicapped diners and people in wheelchairs.
