The Hayward Wolfpack men’s soccer team will be back in action this Sunday in Hayward as they host the Wolfpack Summer Classic at the Hayward Soccer Complex across from the KOA campground on Highway 63 North.
The Wolfpack will host Green Machine SC of Duluth at 10 a.m. and the Barron Soccer Team at 11:30 a.m. Bracket play will begin at 3 p.m.
On Sunday, Aug. 11, at the WASPL tournament in Rice Lake, the Wolfpack lost in heartbreaking fashion to the top-seeded Eau Claire Heat, 4-3. Hayward battled in the heat with only two subs, but couldn’t pull off the upset.
Kaden Bergman opened up the scoring in the third minute, one-timing a shot into the bottom corner of the net with the assist going to Ethan Wolfe.
Eau Claire answered in the 16th minute on a breakaway, then scored again in the same fashion in the 20th minute.
The score was 2-1 at halftime, but the Pack came out flying after the break, with Bergman scoring again on a through ball in the 47th minute with an assist from Confidence Idim.
Eau Claire answered immediately in the 49th minute. Bergman finished off his hat trick in the 68th minute on a upper-right corner shot, with Idim assisting again.
The game stayed at 3-3 with both teams having chances, only to see Eau Claire score with three minutes left in the game to secure a spot in the championship game.
The Wolfpack then lost 3-1 in the third-place game against St. Croix on very heavy legs. Bergman had the goal in that game as well.
Third-seeded Barron Soccer Team defeated Eau Claire 4-0 in the championship game and will represent northwest Wisconsin in the Wisconsin State Cup in September.
