When the idea of raising $10,000 to purchase 1,000,000 pounds of gravel for use on the Sawyer County trail system was rolled out by the Sawyer County Snowmobile and ATV Alliance in mid-March, the hope was that the “Friends of the Alliance” program would reach that goal by the end of the year.

But with the support of many area businesses and trail users, more than $6,400 was in the bank by the middle of June.

Online donations at the Alliance website, sawyercountyalliance.com, have brought in more than $1,000, while donations from area businesses have generated more than $4,000. Additional revenue has come in from more than 60 donation canisters at area businesses, as well as from the sale of 50/50 raffle tickets.

This Saturday, June 29, students from Hayward High School with a passion for snowmobiling will be offering raffle tickets for sale at Marketplace Foods from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone who stops by will also be able to take a free guess at the weight of a jug of gravel with the winner receiving $100 in Hayward Chamber of Commerce bucks.
