The Lakeland Union Thunderbirds and Rice Lake Warriors placed first and second on the WIAA boys golf sectional meet at Hayward Golf Club Wednesday, May 29, and advanced to the state championships at University Ridge in Verona June 3-4.
The Hayward Hurricanes placed fifth at sectional and did not have any qualifiers for the state meet.
Golfers enjoyed sunny, warm weather for the competition. Team scores were Lakeland, 303; Rice Lake, 304; Northwestern, 315; St. Croix Central, 333; Hayward, 341; Osceola, 345; Neillsville-Loyal, 345; McDonell Central-Regis, 348; Amery, 353; Baldwin-Woodville, 356; Black River Falls, 369; and Arcadia, 369.
Rice Lake’s Simon Cuskey and Blake Zadra were the co-medalists, as both shot 1-over-par 73. Lakeland’s Kyle Bengtson and Kaeden Nomm tied for third with scores of 74.
Three golfers qualified for state as individuals. They are Kordell Swanson, Northwestern, 75; Matt Mueller, St. Croix Central, 77; and Trevor Priem, Northwestern, 79.
Gavin Abric led the Hurricanes, tying for 11th place with an 80. Devin Sheehan placed 18th with an 82, Jack Bergum 25th with an 85, Jack Hansen 97th with a 94, and Gibson Walsh 64th with a 96.
