The Hayward Hawks opened their 2019 season May 31 by playing the defending Wisconsin Baseball Association state champion Osseo Merchants to a 9-9 stalemate at Osseo in a game that was halted after seven innings because of lightning.
The game saw Keith Heinz get three hits, while Phil Zeigle, Cory Yoder, Tom Danczyk and Marshall Kennel had two hits apiece. Paul Danczyk, Josh Kanters, Tom Danczyk and Kennell each had a double and Tom Danczyk drove in four runs.
Kyle Cummings pitched six innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs, striking out five and walking four. Zeigle pitched one inning, as the Merchants scored two unearned runs.
On Saturday, June 1, the Hawks shut out the powerful Haugen Knights 4-0 in an Independent League game in Haugen.
Starting pitcher Tom Danczyk went eight innings, giving up four hits and no runs while walking two and striking out three. Cory Yoder earned the save, pitching the final inning, giving up no hits and no runs, walking one and striking out one.
Yoder and Paul Danczyk had two hits and an RBI apiece, while Marshall Kennell had two hits, Phil Zeigle had a hit and two RBIs, and Keith Heinz, Tommy Danczyk had one hit apiece.
The Hawks now get set to open a seven-game homestand beginning this Friday, June 7, when they host the Spooner Cardinals, the reigning Independent League champions from last year.
The Hawks will then host Spring Valley Saturday night. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. at Larry Somerville Field.
