The Hayward Hawks scored a big 5-3 Independent League win over the Spooner Cardinals at Larry Somerville Field Friday, June 7, to run their league record to 2-0.
The next night, the Hawks crushed the Spring Valley Hawks 21-1 at Somerville Field to remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0-1.
Facing Spooner on Friday, the Hawks scored four runs in the first inning and one in the fourth. Starting pitcher Tom Danczyk went eight innings to get the win, giving up four hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking three. Cory Yoder pitched the last inning to earn the save, giving up no hits and no runs and striking out one.
Keith Heinz and Marshall Kennell had two hits and one double apiece, while Phil Zeigle, Cory Yoder, Paul Danczyk, Tom Danczyk, Kyle Cummings (double) and Terry Kilmer had two hits apiece.
On Saturday, the Hawks scored seven runs in the first inning and added nine in the third while banging out 22 hits, including seven for extra bases. Eleven different Hawks hit safely as Spring Valley burned through five pitchers.
Phil Zeigle (double), Paul Danczyk and Marshall Kennell had three hits apiece, while Cory Yoder, Jake Sande (two doubles), Austin Wessel (double), Josh Kanters (double, triple) and Sam Yoder had two hits each. Contributing one hit each were Keith Heinz (triple), Jason Rasmussen and Tom Danzyk.
For the Hawks, Shane Yoder and Phil Zeigle split the pitching duties, allowing just five hits and no earned runs. Yoder tossed four innings with four hits and one walk. Zeigle tossed three innings to get the win, allowing one hit and no walks and striking out three.
