The Hayward Hurricanes girls soccer team lost to Rice Lake 2-0 in the regional championship game Saturday, June 1.

The Warriors will host Ashland in the sectional semifinal this Thursday. The Oredockers defeated Somerset 3-0 in their regional championship.

The Canes advanced to the regional championship with a 3-1 victory over Barron-Cumberland at Heidi Friermood Field in Hayward on Thursday, May 30.

In Thursday’s game, Dianna Martin gave Hayward a 1-0 lead with a goal from 10 yards out at 5:40 of the first half.

Martin put the Canes up 2-0 with her second goal from 40 yards out at 51:25 of the second half. Then Emma Bratley took a free kick that was deflected into the net at 61:12, giving Hayward a 3-0 lead.

Barron’s Rylee Stauner scored at 72:19 to make the score 3-1 for Hayward. 

At 80:30 Barron was awarded a penalty kick, but Hurricane goalie Veda Sunderland made the big stop to preserve Hayward’s lead and the win.

The Hurricanes finished their season with a 10-5-5 overall record and finished third in the Middle Border Conference with a 6-1-3 record. New Richmond took first place at 10-0 and Somerset was second at 9-2.
