Hayward Hurricanes baseball team members received all-conference and team awards along with letters and certificates at a season recognition banquet on June 5.
The Hurricanes this year finished with a 19-8 overall record and were third in the Heart O’ North Conference with a 11-3 record. They went 2-1 in WIAA tournament play.
With 27 games and 35 practices this year, “It takes a whole lot to stick with it for so long,” said head coach Mark Berquist. ”Everyone goes through a bad spot, and I give each of you credit for coming back and being good. You stuck with it and I’m super proud of you for doing that.”
The Hurricanes’ 19 wins were the most of any team in the Heart O’ North this year, and the Canes played the hardest schedule of any conference team, Berquist said.
Berquist presented the following team awards:
Senior Perseverance Award: Dak Doyle, Josh Kanters, Terry Kilmer, Jacob Boss, Hunter Strapon.
Silver Slugger Award (batting average of .350 or better): Dak Doyle, Terry Kilmer, Austin Wessel, Josh Kanters, Cole Asp. Kilmer led the team with 35 hits.
Defensive Players of the Year: Jackson Morgan, Terry Kilmer.
Ace of Spades pitching award: Dak Doyle. He finished with a 9-0 record in league play and a 0.59 earned run average. “Dak does not dominate the other team’s batters,” Berquist said. “He outsmarts them.”
Receiving Heart O’ North All-Conference Player awards were Dak Doyle, first team pitcher; Terry Kilmer, first team catcher; Austin Wessel, first team infield; Josh Kanters, second team outfield; and Jacob Boss, honorable mention outfield.
Coach Mike Siverling said this year’s Hurricane JV team, which included nine freshmen, finished with a 16-5 record.
Besides head coach Mark Berquist and Mike Siverling, the Hurricane coaches included Kyle Cummings (infielders), Tom Heinrich (pitchers), Marshall Kennell (catchers), Dalton Hessel and Shane Poppe (JV team).
