Nashville husband and wife alt-country duo The Smoking Flowers, joined by regional favorites Sonofmel and Slideman, will return to Hayward Friday, July 19, at Hayward’s Park Center. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.

Advance tickets are $20 and are available online at and at Art Beat in downtown Hayward. Admission is $30 at the door. Students 18 years of age and younger are admitted to Park Center events for $5.

The Smoking Flowers are Kim and Scott Collins. They have discovered what some duos spend their entire careers trying to find: a blend of artistic talent and subtle sensuality. As Kim dances between drums, accordion, acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica and shimmering tambourine, Scott plays electric and acoustic guitar and harmonica and delivers his vocals with the voice of a feisty, hardscrabble troubadour.

Their influences range from Led Zeppelin to Gillian Welch, the Ramones and Neil Young.  Kim was ironically considered by one of those very influences when she was up for the female vocalist spot in Robert Plant’s “Band of Joy,” a spot that ultimately went to her friend Patti Griffin.

In 2013 following the recording of their second album “2 Guns,” Kim was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, delaying the album’s release by two years.  With Kim’s cancer in remission, the duo took life by the reins and hit the road in their vintage Volvo 240 station wagon, touring across America and Canada for three years straight to promote “2 Guns.”

With this life-altering experience to draw upon, and three years of intense touring under their belt, the couple then released “Let’s Die Together” in June 2018, and now, almost a year later, they are touring to promote “Snowball Out Of Hell,” an “acoustic companion to ‘Let’s Die Together’” — both albums being conceived during Kim’s battle with cancer. The two albums are being released together as a deluxe double album digitally and on vinyl.

The Smoking Flowers, currently on tour world wide, offer songs that paint a picture of a couple that lives together (married 19 years), writes together, plays together and loves life together. For more information, visit
