High water levels along County Highway N between Drummond and Barnes in Bayfield County Wisconsin have closed the highway between Hiatt Road to the west and Pigeon Lake Road to the east, the Bayfield County Highway Department has announced.

Closure began on Tuesday, May 21 and is anticipated to last several weeks.

Waters rose with flooding in June 2018. Pigeon Lake drains a large area and has no outlet.

Bayfield County raised the eastern section of County Highway N by 2.5 feet in the fall of 2018 to address high water levels.

In the spring of 2019, waters remained high. Snowmelt and rains over the past 30 days have raised water levels over 6 inches above the roadway in multiple sections making passage unsafe. Water levels are anticipated to continue to rise.

For east bound traffic, detour routes are County Highway A north to Iron River, then east on US 2 to Highway 63 and south to Drummond (approximately a 60 minute detour).

For west bound traffic, detour routes are Highway 63 north to US 2, west to County Highway A in Iron River and south on County Highway A. (approximately a 60 minute detour).

Bayfield County is working to find shorter routes and a solution to the high water level.
