Fat Tire Triathlon

Connie Meek of Hayward comes out of the water after the swim portion of the Fat Tire Triathlon Aug. 26.

This year’s Fat Tire Triathlon, held Saturday, Aug. 26, at Silverthorn Park in Seeley, went down as the wettest on record, according to event coordinators. Three inches of rain fell on race day.

Individuals completed a swim, mountain bike ride and trail run, and many teamed up for the relay category.

“Most of us consider these conditions dreadful — the crowd embraced it,” said event director Suzann Mouw. “Why not? It’s a triathlon, and after the swim, you’re wet anyway.”

Overall winners of the Olympic race were elite cross-country skier Chris Pappathopoulos of Sun Prairie for the men and Dawn Kittleson of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, for the women’s division. Scott Brown of Minneapolis won the men’s sprint event, while Jenny Swift of Hayward repeated as women’s winner.

Attendance grew 50 percent this year, introducing many new people to the area’s off-road trail amenities.

New Moon Ski and Bike provided on-site technical support, and Big Water Coffee Roasters had hot refreshments for the athletes. Framed Bikes sponsored the event.

Donations will benefit the Hayward Nordic Ski Team and Hayward Composite Mountain Bike Team for volunteer support.

Next year’s event will be held Saturday, Aug. 25.
