The American Red Cross will be sending 1,300 Christmas cards to military service members and veterans this month, thanks to a “Holidays for Heroes” campaign initiated by Armstrong Insurance Agency of Hayward that used the writing talents of students from the Hayward Primary and Intermediate Schools and Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe School.
In October, Armstrong Agency requested the community to donate unused Christmas cards. Stone Lake Lumber Company and Marketplace Foods, along with the Hallmark Card Company, donated Christmas cards for the program, and many community members dropped off donated cards at the agency’s office.
Armstrong was able to provide cards for signing by 900 kindergarten through fifth grade students at Hayward Primary and Intermediate Schools and 120 students at LCO Ojibwe School.
Community members also were encouraged to stop by Armstrong Agency’s office to sign cards. Lori’s Card and Gift decorated their own Holidays for Heroes card collection box. Armstrong staff also set up a card signing table at Marketplace Foods Saturday, Nov. 16, where many people stopped to sign cards.
With the support of students and community, Armstrong collected approximately 1,300 signed Christmas cards for the campaign. They were delivered to the American Red Cross office in Duluth prior to Thanksgiving.
Once Red Cross volunteers have screened the cards, they will deliver some of the cards to the Wisconsin National Guard’s 950th Engineering Company, which has units in Spooner and Superior. In addition, some of the cards will go to members of the 148th Fighter Wing of the Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard in Duluth, the Veterans Administration Clinic in Superior and several other places in the region.
