House fire on Hwy. 63 South in Hayward

Firefighters attack a fire in a vacant house on Hwy. 63 South in Hayward early Tuesday, June 11.

A fire reported at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, heavily damaged an unoccupied single story house at 15952W Highway 63, about 200 yards south of Vermont Avenue in Hayward.

The garage area of the house was engulfed in flames when the fire was reported.

Approximately 14 personnel with trucks from the City of Hayward and Town of Hayward fire departments along with Hayward police and Sawyer County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene. The Town of Bass Lake Fire Department was dispatched for mutual aid, to provide additional personnel.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and were on scene until 5:30 a.m.

The fire was contained to the garage area and the cause is under investigation, said City of Hayward Fire Chief Mike Herrmann.
