The Hayward-LCO Hurricanes football team defeated the St. Croix Falls Saints 26-14 Friday night, Oct. 4, posting their fifth conference win of the season and thereby qualifying for the WIAA playoffs.
The Canes scored on a 60 yard drive to open the game. Danny Toles returned the kickoff to his 40 yard line and then caught a 42-yard pass from Austin Wessel to the 1-yard line. Nate Sorensen ran one yard for a touchdown. Wessel passed to Derrick Miller for two extra points.
St. Croix Falls scored a touchdown early in the second quarter plus an extra point to trail 8-7. Later in the quarter, Sorensen caught a screen pass from Wessel and ran 43 yards for a touchdown. The Canes led 14-7. The Canes then scored on a 76-yard drive, with Sorensen taking the ball four yards into the end zone, putting the Canes up 20-7.
The Canes then scored on n 81 yard drive in 15 plays, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Sorensen. The Canes led 26-7. St. Croix then scored on a 59-yard option pass, making the score 26-14 for the Canes.
The Hurricanes will host Ladysmith in their homecoming game Friday, Oct. 11.
