The Hayward Hurricanes girls took first place in the Hayward Cross-Country Invitational Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Hatchery Creek County Park trails and Birkebeiner Trail.
More than 600 runners from 11 schools competed in the high school and middle school races at this meet on a sunny, warm, windy day.
The Hurricane girls placed three runners in the top 10 on their way to first place. Nel Hanson finished fourth in 22:06, Eliana Malnourie was fifth in 22:21, and Anneliese Bauer seventh in 22:57. ngrid Sokup was 11th in 23:34. Allyson Vobornik 31st, Maggie Martin 32nd, Ashleigh Magnuson 36th, Soile Doyle 65th, Emma Mittlesdorf 80th, Kennedy Sprenger 91st, and Jessica Aubart 102nd.
Hayward tallied 57 points, followed by Barron with 76, Cameron with 79, Northwestern with 87 and Chetek-Weyerhaeuser with 109.
Chetek-Weyerhaeuser runner Lana Blumer won the varsity girls 5K race in 21:49.
Northwestern took first place in the boys 5K race with 35 points, Bloomer was second with 73, Ladysmith third with 105, Cameron fourth with 110 and Hayward fifth with 134.
Pacing the Hayward boys were Ben Becker, 17th in 20:54; Reese Harrison, 21st; Berk Diedrich, 29th; Gabe Martin, 30th; Chase McCallum, 37th; Austin Hansen, 49th; Jackson Morgan, 51st; and Zach Laier, 102nd.
Sam Borchers from Washburn won the varsity boys 5K race in 18:53.

The Hurricanes’ next competition will be the Heart O’ North Conference meet at Norwood Golf Course, hosted by Northwestern, Tuesday, Oct. 15.
