School Board Member Abbey Fischer was the first of 14 people to speak during public comment at the start of the Rice Lake Board of Education’s meeting Monday and during her allotted three minutes she resigned. An additional three people were denied a chance because time had elapsed on the 30 minutes reserved for it. Those three were told they would be given priority at the board’s next meeting.

Fischer, who sat in the audience and not in her board seat, said she resigned “to protect her mental and emotional health.” She acknowledged she is a lesbian and said that she can no longer sit quietly listening to people at the [board] table and podium whose remarks are “ignorant, inflammatory, hurtful and harmful to the LGBTQIA community.”
