A May 25 game of “play wrestling” at a cookout resulted in felony charges for a Chetek man and a fractured metacarpal and misdemeanor charges for a Rice Lake man.
Court documents state Jeremy A. Gackle, 33, became upset and retrieved a dog chain before threatening Jeffery W. Young Jr. Young walked off to cool down, and Gackle and two women went on a liquor run, documents state. In the parking lot, Gackle stood outside the car with the dog chain around his neck as the women went into the store to purchase vodka.
Eventually, the group of four found themselves at a four-way stop near the Chetek Dam, where tempers flared and the two men squared off, reports state. Young told police he hit Gackle twice before Gackle kicked him. Gackle then struck Young’s right arm with the chain. Police say Young rated the pain on a scale of 0 to 10 as 10.
Witnesses to the fight told police Gackle hit Young multiple times with the chain wrapped around his fist. Young ran off towards the Chetek Airport and hid behind aircraft hangers as police looked for him. Later a friend picked him up and drove to Birchwood while he hid in the trunk.
When police interviewed him later on at jail he was wearing a soft cast.
Young was charged with three misdemeanors: battery, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer.
Gackle has been charged with two felonies: substantial battery and bail jumping, as well as misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He was released on a $500 cash bond.
