Chapin flag

Geraldine Vanderweele accepts a folded flag in honor of her great-grandfather and Civil War vet Alonzo Chapin. Presenting the flag is Jim  Cjajkowski, who researched extensively to find out who was buried there.

One hundred and five years after a Civil War veteran’s death, there is finally a closing chapter. It occurred Saturday at a cemetery in Haugen, as a folded burial flag was presented to Geraldine Vanderweele, great-granddaughter of Alonzo A. Chapin.

“This is a very, very proud thing to do. All the searching Jim did was wonderful,” said Vanderweele, referring to Jim Czajkowski, whose diligent research led to the discovery of who was buried under a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) marker in 2017.
