Since the early 1980s, I’ve heard and read often how Social Security was going bankrupt in 10 or 20 years. President Roosevelt’s landmark social insurance program of 1935 was enacted during the Great Depression. It would address the permanent problem of economic security, a federal safety net, for the elderly, disabled, unemployed and disadvantaged Americans. Now, at least 112 countries have some type of general social security measures.
