“Put some pork on your fork and soul in your bowl” is the theme at Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse, now open in Rice Lake.
Barbecue aromas greet customers as they enter the doors at 2498 S. Main St. The business opened last Thursday and is owned and operated by David W. Anderson, known as Famous Dave.
“Rice Lake is a growing, thriving community,” said Anderson. “We see Rice Lake as the gateway for us in developing more Old Southern BBQs locations in the future.”
This is Anderson’s second Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse, the first one opened in Hayward last April. The official name is Jimmie’s Old Southern Smokehouse BBQ, in recognition of his late father. Anderson credits his father, who grew up in the deep south, for teaching him everything he needed to know about barbecue as he grew up on the south side of Chicago.
Anderson founded Famous Dave’s in Round Lake in 1994, and after expanding to many locations, he sold the business. Recently, however, he rejoined Famous Dave’s as a consultant.
“Barbecue is America’s food,” Anderson said. “It’s how America celebrates. It’s party food.”
Claire Terrones, head of operations for Old Southern BBQ said, “This is a fast casual restaurant with line service. Everything is freshly smoked and made from scratch.”
Anderson said that the side dishes are made fresh every 15 minutes so nothing sits out getting old.
The menu offers pulled pork, beef brisket, barbecued ribs, charcoal chicken or smoked sausage. Anderson said the meat is sweet Maplewood smoked.
There are a variety of side dishes including beans, rice, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, broccoli salad, mashed potatoes, potato salad, fries and more. An addition to the meals are cornbread muffin tops.
Also featured are barbecue bowls where the customer chooses a meat, a base and a topping.
Old Southern Smokehouse BBQ offers carry outs and or in-house seating for about 85 people. Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.
