Preceded by people standing along Wisconsin Avenue holding signs saying such things as “Trans rights are human rights,” “Forced coming out is not safe” and “Gender diversity is normal,” it was standing room only at the Monday evening meeting of the Rice Lake Board of Education where discussion continued on proposed changes to the Rice Lake Area School District’s policy on transgender and gender diverse students.

School Board President Keven Jensen reiterated that the proposed changes to Policy 411 are to clarify when parental consent must be given. That is when a student wants to go by a different name or use a different bathroom. He said the policy is in accordance with state statutes and WIAA rules.
