Fourth-graders from Haugen Elementary and St. Joseph School did tree-planting honors at an Honorary Arbor Day held May 11 at Moon Lake Park in Rice Lake. They were led by city forester Mike Ashlin and Parks and Rec employees Stephen Olah and Pam Trcka. Talking to the kids about the importance of trees were DNR forester Janette Cain and urban forest coordinator Abby Krause. Paul Chase spoke on behalf of the Kiwanis Club, which has supported the tree plantings for 32 years. This year the club paid for five Princeton hybrid elm trees, which are resistance to Dutch elm disease. Mayor Justin Fonfara proclaimed May 11 an Honorary Arbor Day. McCain's paid for Arbor Day backpacks for each student.
