In their first game without even a scrimmage, the Rice Lake Warriors fell to Menomonie 68-47 in a boys basketball opener Tuesday in Ole Olsen Gym.
The Warriors had a brief 6-5 lead before the Mustangs went on a 13-0 run to break the game open at 18-6 midway through the first half.
Rice Lake returns to action Friday at Eau Claire Memorial at 7:15 p.m. and hosts Northwestern on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Warriors have six players returning from last season, but the top five scorers from that 8-13 team graduated.
Junior inside-outside player Nolan Rowe returns after averaging three points per game last season, along with guards Zach Widdes, Ben Brodzinski, Nick Schlampp and Alex Belongia and forward Judson Rikkers.
Widdes and Rikkers are the only two seniors, while Brodzinski and Schlampp are juniors and Belongia is a sophomore.
The Warriors lack height, but 6-foot-4 junior Tyler Nelson will see varsity duty, along with two other juniors, 6-0 Andy Farm and 5-10 Braeden Resnick.
New to varsity are sophomore Kole Klemme and freshmen Matt Farm, Harrison Lipke and Tyler Orr.
