A 57-year-old Brookfield man who crossed from his lane, through the oncoming lane, and off the road, hitting a tree, may have been unconscious before the November 29 crash, Sawyer County Sheriff Douglas Mrotek said.
The department was notified at 11:15 a.m. of the accident on Hwy. 40, south of the junction with Hwy. 48 in the town of Weirgor in Sawyer County. The driver had been heading south in a pickup. Eyewitnesses said he had been hunched over the steering wheel right before the crash. Witnesses and first-responders attempted to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.
Authorities are not naming him pending contact of his family.
Sheriff's deputies, Sawyer County EMS, State Patrol, Exceland Fire Department, and the Department of Natural Resources all responded to the accident.
