Winners at the Knight of Columbus state Soccer Challenge, pictured from left to right were: Drew Hauschild, Jessica Ludwig, and Alex Shimkets.

The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge started in September with 20 area boys and girls in the local competition held at Elk Lake Park in Phillips. Boys and girls competed separately in age brackets of 9 to 14, each contestant shot fifteen penalty shots on an unattended goal. The contestant with the most points scored walked away as the winner. Winners included Arianna Riley, Arianna Mesko, Allison Kulwicki, Jessica Ludwig, Drew Hauschild, Landon Vojtech, Joseph Janus, Andrew DeLasky, and Alex Shimkets. Scores of the first place kickers were recorded and compared to other top kickers of the Soccer Challenge from around the Diocese of Superior. The top two youth in each age group from the Diocese were then offered the opportunity to compete at the state competition in De Pere in early November.

Phillips youth that travelled to De Pere and ultimately placed in the top three at the state Soccer Challenge were Jessica Ludwig (second place, age 12), Drew Hauschild (third place, age 9) and Alex Shimkets (first place, age 14).

Each year the Knights of Columbus, Fr. J.P. Slowey Council #2963 in Phillips, have been offering the youth of the area the opportunity to compete in knowledge, sports and artistic competitions.
