Retiring Park Falls Elementary School fifth grade teacher Helen Armstrong poses with grade books from all 33 years of her career as an educator in Park Falls.

Helen Armstrong has been a fixture in Pod C at Park Falls Elementary School for the past 33 years. When school year 2021 comes to a close, the books will close on her career in education as well.

Born and raised in Tomahawk, Armstrong knew from childhood she would someday work with children. Eighth in a family of 10, with seven brothers and two sisters, it seemed kids were always around. She became an aunt for the first time at the age of three, so a career surrounded by kids seemed altogether natural. During her early school years, first at St. Mary’s Parochial School, where she attended through sixth grade, and for the remainder of her public middle- and high-school education, she dreamed of being a doctor. A pediatrician to be precise. A dream she claims she “talked herself out of” in her third year of college.

A filing cabinet holds letters written by fifth graders that will be mailed to them at the time of their high school graduation.

Windowsills and shelves in retiring Park Falls Elementary School fifth grade teacher Helen Armstrong's classroom are filled with mementos and gifts from her 33 years as an educator in Park Falls.
