FIFIELD — As Dec. 18 approached, local birders in our area prepared for the 56th Fifield-Park Falls Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC).

What these birders had in common was a goal to count and record every bird seen or heard from dawn to dusk within a 15-mile diameter circle centered on the intersection of State Highways 13 and 70 in Fifield. Some of these local birders took to the roads and some stayed at home to count birds at their feeders. A few took to the woods after dark to “owl.” This means they tried to find owls typically by listening or playing or imitating an owl call to see if an owl responds.
