Kolacky-Kolachy-Kolace-Kolache: No matter how you spell it they are always good right out of the oven. During the third full weekend in June (father’s day weekend), the entire community comes together to celebrate our different heritages at the Czech-Slovak Festival in Phillips. The community has many visitors from neighboring states participating in the various activities. It takes hundreds of volunteers to make this a success. Unfortunately, too many of our parents and grandparents are no longer with us and it is getting more difficult to find people willing to take on different parts of the festival. It looks like this year, without someone stepping forward, the Wisconsin State Kolacky baking contest will not happen. This has been one of the highlights of the weekend, and some of the best kolackies have even made it to Madison, where the governor was heard saying that this was the best kolacky he had ever eaten. We are still hoping that someone will come forward to organize and oversee the kolacky baking and eating contests so that we can continue making this part of the weekend’s activities. We are optimistic that with a few new volunteers the festival can continue for years to come.
