Aug. 11, 1937 - July 27, 2019
Richard Grimm, Phillips High School Class of 1955, passed away unexpectedly at his current home in St. Charles, Illinois, on Saturday, July 27, 2019. He was 81 years old. He was born on Aug. 11, 1937 in Chicago, the son of Boniface (“Ben”) and Frances (Shafarik) Grimm. He moved to Phillips in 1947, with his brothers (Arnold and Robert) and sister (Francine), where his family ran a dairy farm. While attending Phillips High School, he played football and boxed with the Golden Gloves.
After graduating, he studied forestry at UW-Stevens Point. He then joined the National Guard. His basic training was at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, and he was called up to Ft. Lewis, Washington with the Army’s 32nd Red Arrow Division for a tour of service during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. Around that time, he also worked in the logging industry in the Northwoods, peeling popple, and working at the cranberry bogs. While serving in the military, he was assigned to a unit that practiced demolitions, but was also required to perform extensive cooking.
Upon being honorably discharged, Richard pursued cooking as a career. His first culinary job brought him to St. Charles, Illinois, near Chicago. He went on to work in numerous fine dining establishments, including 25 years at the famous Mill Race Inn of Geneva, Illinois, where he was named executive chef. It was also through the Mill Race that he met his wife.
Richard was united in marriage to Ingeborg (“Inge”) E. Kloos on Oct. 12, 1968 in St. Charles, Illinois. He and Inge settled in St. Charles, where they raised two sons. Richard enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, fishing, and traveling. His loyalty to Phillips High School, the University of Wisconsin, and the Green Bay Packers, in particular, never wavered. He was also fond of animals, including his horse “Danny Boy” while working in the Northwoods.
He is survived by his children: Brian (Stephanie) Grimm of St. Charles and Richard (Angie) Grimm of Darien, Connecticut; his grandchildren: Luke and Sabrina Grimm, and Samantha, Jacob, and Natalie Grimm; and a sister, Francine (Arnold) Rask of Mt. Horeb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, and his brothers.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, and a memorial service held will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 South Third Street, St. Charles, Illinois.
