James “Jim” George Habas, age 65, of Ashland, passed away with loving family by his side, Monday, October 14, 2019 at Court Manor Health Services in Ashland. He was born July 26, 1954, the son of James and Jean (Ante) Habas.
Jim was raised in Ashland and Park Falls, graduating from Park Falls High School in 1972. He enlisted into the U.S. Air Force where he was employed for over 20 years. Jim was part of the 16th S.O.S. unit that was stationed at Hurlburt Field in Florida. He was a gunner on the AC-130 gunship during the 100-hour war. He also served in the Persian Gulf War, Grenada and several other conflicts.
Jim was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church serving as Bingo caller for many years and also volunteered for community dinners and events during the holiday seasons. He was an avid sportsman who was a member of the Archery Association of Northern Wisconsin. He was also a sports fan who was often found rooting for the Packers, Badgers, Brewers and Bucks.
Jim’s favorite pastimes were archery shooting, playing cribbage in tournaments and with friends, making bird houses, four wheeling and grouse hunting. Jim also enjoyed taking many memorable trips to Las Vegas and watching the Three Stooges and Hogan’s Hero’s.
He is survived by his two children, Jerode (Meghan) Habas and Jennifer (Chris) Wilson; 5 grandchildren, Jacob, Levi and Cassidy Habas and Wyatt and Colt Wilson; father, James Habas; siblings, John (Doris) Habas, Cheryl (Steve) Parker, Jeff Habas, Jerry Habas and Donna (Paul) Below; life-long friends, Stan Gurski, Dana Gorney, Cathi Cooper, Bill Turner and Dan Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother; brother, Joseph and infant nephew, Tyler.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 noon, Monday, October 21, 2019 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland with Fr. Joseph Kumar Mayakuntla officiating. Inurnment and military services will follow the service in the St. Agnes Cemetery in Ashland.
Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church on Monday. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall after the committal services.
