James Joseph Surprenant, 80, of Epping, New Hampshire, passed away on Sept. 11, 2019 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Harmony on March 11, 1939, son of the late Eugene J. and Bertha (Palmer) Surprenant.
James graduated from Phillips High School in Phillips in 1957, and he served for six years in the US Army and for 15.5 years in the Army Reserve as a medic. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from Merrimack College and worked for 40 years at Teledyne Electro Mechanisms where he retired as a purchasing manager in 2004. James was the vice president of the Ray-Fre Senior Center in Raymond, New Hampshire. He was a communicant at St. Joseph Church in Epping and also belonged to the Knights of Columbus as a fourth degree member. A member of the Richard A. Mitchell Post 51 in Epping, New Hampshire, he was also a member of the Raymond Sportsman’s Club and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
Throughout his life, James enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and playing cribbage.
James was predeceased by his wife Arlene M. (Dziadosz) Surprenant in 2014. He is survived by his son, James M. Surprenant and wife Ellen Cosgrove of Cheshire, Connecticut; his daughter, Kristen Marie Surprenant of Epping, New Hampshire; his brother, Clifton D. Surprenant and wife Carol of Phillips; his sister, Grace Upson of Phillips; his granddaughter, Meredith Izzo; two great-granddaughters, Caroline and Maya Izzo of Smithfield, Rhode Island; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sept. 14, 2019, at St. Joseph Church in Epping. Burial with military honors was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Epping.
