July 2, 1935 - Dec. 19, 2019
Donald William Mertig Sr. passed away at his home in Shanagolden on Dec. 19, 2019.
Don was born on July 2, 1935 to William and Madeline (York) Mertig of Shanagolden. Don married Sue C. Kyler on March 21, 1959. Don and Sue were married 60 years and have four children. It could be said Don died of a broken heart; it had been 97 days since the love of his life, Sue, had passed away. He didn’t want to be without her.
He is survived by his children: Cindy (Ron) Beck, Wendy (Kevin) Bong, Donna (Daniel Dahlman) Mertig and Don (Shannon) Mertig. Don leaves behind his grandchildren: Ryan Beck, Marc Beck, Megan Sue (Matthew) Beck Peterson, Randi Sue Bong, Ashley Mertig, Jordan Mertig, Jacob Mertig and Madison Mertig. He is also survived by longtime hunting partner and cousin Theodore Mertig, and very special nephews and nieces. Don was preceded in death by his wife Sue, his parents, and sister, Gertrude Petroski Jamieson.
In addition to working on and heading the family dairy, Don raised his children and invested 34 years as the town chairman of the Town of Shanagolden. Don’s grandfather, Bruno Mertig, helped establish the Town of Shanagolden in 1907. As Don’s nephew, Mike Petroski said, “this little township that Don so cherished will never be the same without him.”
Don was an avid reader, a passion he adopted later in life from his wife Sue. He was such an enthusiastic reader; his family could not keep enough new books around for him to read.
This quiet gentle giant of a man was and is deeply tied to his family and friends. The close relationships Don had with his wife and children will be held forever in their hearts. The honesty and integrity in how he lived his life will forever impact the generations that follow him.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior at the Assembly of God Church in Glidden.
Don’s family wishes to express gratitude to Joe Eder, the paramedics and first responders who attended him. Thank you to The Assembly of God Church members and Pastor Brock Brandenburg and Pastor Frank Wheeler.
Memorial service arrangements have been entrusted to the Mountain Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ashland and Mellen. Online condolences for Don’s family may be left at mountainfuneralhomes.com
