Sept. 14, 1926 - Aug. 6, 2019
Dean George Wartgow, age 92, of Butternut, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 at Park Manor Nursing Home in Park Falls. A lifelong resident of Butternut, Dean was born Sept. 14, 1926 to Herman A. and Elsie (Linsmeyer) Wartgow. He graduated from Butternut High School and joined the United States Army during WWII serving in the Pacific Theater. On Sept. 29, 1951, Dean married Marilyn Morgan, his love and wife of more than 50 years until she passed away following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Dean and Marilyn had a mutual affection for the lake, frequently taking boat rides and fishing. For nearly 25 years, they spent summers enjoying Butternut Lake with their ever-growing family.
Dean loved wildlife and nature. You could often find him in his backyard cooking on his fire pit, enjoying a beer and talking with his neighbors about Wisconsin sport teams, though none more passionately than his beloved Green Bay Packers.
A jack of many trades, Dean worked in road construction, logging, and owned and operated Wartgow & Son Excavating before spending 22 years as a rural carrier for the United States Post Office. He was a member of the Butternut American Legion Post and recently received local and national honors for 70 years of membership.
Dean is survived by three children: Cindy (Rick) Chappell of Lake Mills, Judy (Mike) Feit of Butternut, and Pat (Denise) Wartgow of Green Bay; eight grandchildren: Stacey, Derek (Pam), Dustin, Jason (Marisa), Joshua (Ashley), Kayla (Adam), Josh (Emily), and Tony (Amanda); seven great-grandchildren: Sona, Alexandria, Hudson, Harper, Lexi, Brewer, and Madison; one brother, Herman (Gladys) Wartgow of Butternut; two brothers-in-law: Dennis (Peggy) Morgan of Butternut and Thomas Morgan of Park Falls; three sisters-in-law: Shirley Christian of Butternut, Carol Walker of Butternut, and Sandra Morgan of Park Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marilyn; his brother Lynn Wartgow; three brothers-in-law: Bob Christian, Gilbert Walker, and John Morgan; and two sisters-in-law: Florine Wartgow and Barbara Morgan.
The family will hold a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Butternut. Rev. John A. Deitz will officiate. A visitation will be held on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Butternut American Legion Post would be greatly appreciated.
The Novitzke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
