Phillips Flurry

A large group gathered for the Phillips Flurry snowshoe race last year.

Just in time to break the mid-winter cabin fever blues, the Phillips Area Chamber of Commerce WinterFest celebration is poised to launch a weekend of fun Jan. 26-27.

This year’s event brings together a variety of local businesses and activities for all participants to enjoy.

A “shop local” event will run from Thursday, Jan. 24 to Sunday, Jan. 27, and people who shop at participating businesses will be entered into a drawing to win one of 10 gift baskets.

Those who would prefer to stay warm indoors can burn off some steam at the free family swimming event at the Phillips Community Pool from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25.

The Phillips Flurry snowshoe race kicks off bright and early on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Phillips School Forest, with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the race starting at 10:30 a.m. There are both 5K and 10K options for racers of all age and skill levels.

Families can venture indoors to warm up and relax at the Phillips Public Library storytime and craft hour, starting at 10 a.m.

An ice fishing contest sponsored by the Chamber will be held throughout the day on Saturday, starting before first light at 6 a.m. and running until 4 p.m. Anglers will gather on Long Lake, Elk Lake, Lake Duroy, and Wilson Lake to vie for cash prizes in five different categories: walleye, northern, crappie, bluegill, and perch.

Starting at 6 p.m., there will be a snowmobile parade starting from Birch Island Resort, followed by a wintery fireworks display over Lake Duroy at 7 p.m.

Folks may then wish to head inside for music and dancing at the VFW Post, which will be hosting JAP Entertainment at 7:30 p.m.

Festivities resume Sunday morning with the Chaparrals snowmobile club breakfast at Club 13, running from 8:30-11 a.m. The chamber’s WinterFest raffle and Tavern League tour drawing will take place at noon.

Afterwards, there will be a free skate at the Phillips ice skating rink from 1-3 p.m. Concessions and refreshments will be sold as a fundraiser for the Phillips splash pad.
