The Chequamegon/Phillips/Butternut High School hockey team rallied for five third-period goals to overcome a 4-2 deficit and take a two-goal lead into the closing minutes before falling 8-7 in overtime at Tomahawk on Monday, Nov. 25.
Brendan BeBeau scored four goals and had two assists for Team SEaL, including two goals and two assists in the third period.
After skating to a 1-1 tie in the first period, Tomahawk outscored Team SEaL 3-1 in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. BeBeau (Grant Kief assist) scored his first goal in the first period and second (Dylan Kleinhans, Marcus Vittone assists) in the second.
Joseph Niece (BeBeau) pulled C/P/B within a goal at 4-3 just 57 seconds into the third period. Tomahawk went back up by two goals less than a minute later before Team SEaL rattled off four straight goals.
BeBeau scored an unassisted goal 2:10 into the period and Mason Freiburger (BeBeau, Keif) knotted the score at 5-5 at the 3:24 mark.
The game remained tied for nearly eight minutes. Shawn Dunlavy (Vittone) gave Team SEaL its first lead at the 11:22 mark and BeBeau gave C/P/B a 7-5 advantage with an unassisted goal with 4:46 to play in regulation.
Tomahawk's Cody Scholz scored at the 13:27 mark and again with 1:07 left in regulation to tie the score and send the game to overtime. Dominic Zattera ended the game 3:12 into the overtime period.
Tomahawk outshot Team SEaL 40-38. The Hatchets had a 14-9 shot advantage in the first period. Team SEaL outshot Tomahawk 13-10 and 15-12 in the second and third periods, respectively. The Hatchets had a 4-1 shot advantage in overtime. Isaac Szymik had 32 saves in net for Team SEaL.
C/P/B returns to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at Mosinee. Team SEaL will host Grantsburg at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Park Falls Recreation Arena.
