An early bird registration discount for the Turtle River Pursuit, held at MECCA Ski Trails in Mercer, is available through Dec. 31. The early bird fee for individuals is $50 for adults and $25 for students. The two-person team early bird fee is $90. Each team member skis one leg of the race, either classic or freestyle. After Dec. 31, 2019 registrants will pay full price.

The Turtle River Pursuit cross country ski event is a two-day race held the weekend of Feb. 15-16. The first leg of the Pursuit, an 11K classic race, will be on Saturday. The second leg is an 11K freestyle race, on Sunday. Saturday’s results determine the skier’s starting time on Sunday. The first skier and team to cross the finish line on Sunday wins the two-day race. Awards will be given to the top three male and female individuals, as well as the top three teams. Age-group winners will also receive awards.

Each of the first 100 racers to register will receive a swag bag full of goodies from event sponsors, a commemorative 2020 neck warmer, and a cloth race bib. All racers will be offered pre- and post-race snacks with hot beverages as well as a delicious hot lunch at the awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Mercer Community Center.

Registration is also open for the Claire d’Loon 5K Classic Tour, a classic style race, offered on Saturday, Feb. 15 at MECCA. The shorter course is designed for recreational skiers, families, and kids. The registration fee for this timed event is $30 for skiers 16 and older, and $15 for younger participants. Claire d’Loon skiers will receive a swag bag, commemorative pin, a racing bib, and snacks. Awards will be given to the first, second, and third place male and female racers.

The Turtle River Pursuit is presented by MECCA Ski Club in collaboration with the Gogebic Range Health Foundation as a fundraising event. Proceeds will be used for trail enhancement and expansion, as well as community outreach programs. For information on registration, cost, activities, and times, visit or email
