The Chequamegon High School golf team placed ninth in the WIAA Div. 3 Cumberland Sectional on Tuesday, May 28.
"Kids had a pretty good day," Screaming Eagles' coach Joel Karnick said. "Lots of very good golfers at this sectional. This was a really tough course. I thought we played our best golf of the year. Senior Jason Chao finished his high school golf career with a real nice round. We beat all the teams that were in our northern regional. That was our goal going into this event. We came close to beating a couple of other teams outside our region."
Luck/Frederic won the sectional title with 338 strokes. Runner-up Spring Valley (339) also advanced to the state meet.
Grantsburg was third with 342 strokes, followed by: Durand, 345; Eleva-Strum, 363; Cadott, 387; Unity, 393; Glenwood City, 394; Chequamegon, 404; Prentice, 421; Ladysmith, 453; and Flambeau, 461.
Chao led the Screaming Eagles with an 18-hole score of 94, which tied for 25th individually. Sam Nesbit finished 38th with a card of 99; Blake Karnick tied for 40th with a 100 and Preston Carper and Joe Balsavich shot 111 and 115, respectively.
