(BPT) - Have you gone to your favorite store to find something, but the shelves are bare? Maybe you shop online and nothing seems to be in stock, or if it is, takes weeks to ship? Supply chain issues are causing retailers to struggle to keep up with consumer demands. Inventory issues and shipping delays have more shoppers turning to resale marketplaces to find what they need while also saving a bundle.
This is particularly true this holiday season. An OfferUp survey of secondhand shoppers found that one in four Americans will use a resale marketplace to shop for holiday gifts and decor this year. Electronics (30%) in particular will be a major theme for shoppers this holiday, followed by furniture and home goods (20%) and clothing, shoes and accessories (18%).
The holidays may open the eyes of many to the potential of resale marketplaces for buying and selling new and used goods. Yet this trend is here to stay as experts predict interest is set to grow into 2022.
“Our findings show that in 2022, 40% of secondhand shoppers plan to sell more on resale marketplaces than in 2021, and one in three admitted they would shop resale more than they did this year. This means it’s never too late to get started,” said Natalie Angelillo, vice president of community at OfferUp.
To help you buy and sell successfully, Angelillo shares insider tips supported by key findings from the survey:
Tip: Consider selling in-demand items
As the pandemic disrupted America's supply chain, things like electronics, furniture and cars were increasingly more expensive and difficult to find. It’s no surprise that these were some of the most searched items on OfferUp this year. Appliances, collectables, name-brand electronics, high-end clothing and accessories, tools, toys and outdoor recreation items are also in high demand. If you have these things and no longer want these items, it’s a great time to consider selling.
Tip: Know what sells in your location
It makes sense patio furniture sells better in the summer. Travel gear is in demand during spring break periods. Desks are in high demand during the back-to-school shopping season. But just as seasonality affects what people are looking for, so does geography. Depending on where you live, specific items near you might be in higher demand than in other parts of the country. Here are some of the top item categories searched by location:
- Furniture: Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis
- Clothing, shoes and accessories: Los Angeles, Houston, Detroit and Cleveland
- Electronics and media: Sacramento, New York and Boston
Tip: Expect to barter and be respectful
The top reason people shop resale apps is because they enjoy a good value and want to save money. Buyers noted that the ability to bargain and negotiate is the second most popular reason why they shop secondhand. Convenience and the ability to find unique, rare or limited-edition items tied for third. If you’re selling, price items fairly and work negotiations into the equation. If you're buying, be respectful and keep offers reasonable. Most people are open to negotiating but low-ball offers are unwelcome.
Tip: Be smart when shopping
Take time to look closely at the photos and the description of items when shopping. Read the seller’s profile and see their ratings and other listings to get a sense of their reputation. Reach out to the seller with any questions and to negotiate prices, but always be respectful and fair. Stick to the OfferUp app to streamline questions and make secure arrangements to buy and meet up. Finally, trust your gut. If a deal seems too good to be true or the seller is trying to direct you off the app, look on the marketplace for another option.
Tip: Be a great seller
When selling goods, an eye-catching, honest listing makes a difference. Post high-quality photos and accurate, detailed descriptions. Price items fairly, keeping in mind if you want a quick sale, you may want to price it lower than others on the marketplace to get more immediate interest. After negotiating a sale, suggest a safe meetup location by using one of OfferUp’s public Community MeetUp spots or ship the item securely through the mail.
