The 2019 Butternut High School volleyball team includes, front row from left: managers Aurora Esberner, Lexi Birchmeier, Kendra Pritzl; middle row: Dakota Gavin, Gwen McCorison, Natalee Pollitt, Pria Popowski, Kendra Kennedy; back row: Coach Erika Roeder, Cassy Bortz, Grace Wegner, Bella Bourgard, Olivia Lawver, Bailey Bebeau, and Coach Kim Bortz.

The Butternut High School volleyball team edged visiting Chequamegon 25-15, 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11 in non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

"It was a great night of volleyball between two evenly matched teams," Midgets' coach Kim Bortz said. "The first few sets we struggled with our passing, making setting difficult. Our hitters then struggled with being aggressive at the net. As the night progressed, this improved, as well as our communication. The team continued to play scrappy and worked together to get the job done. I was very proud of them. They never gave up and fought hard right 'til the end."

Grace Wegner led the Midgets with 17 kills. Gwen McCorison and Cassy Bortz each had 13 digs. Dakota Gavin led the team with three service aces.

Butternut hosts Bayfield in Indianhead Conference play at 6 p.m on Thursday, Sept. 12. The Midgets play in the Winter Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
