WASHBURN – Nasturtiums, sunflowers, marigolds – the Washburn Elementary School garden exploded with end-of-summer gold last week. Amidst this currency a small but important gathering took place on August 24 with U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin and Midwest Farm to School Regional Lead Jenna Segal, attending a Farm to School site visit at the Washburn Elementary School garden and high school high tunnel. Also present were State Senator Janet Bewley, State Representative Beth Meyers, administrators from both the Washburn and Ashland School districts, Jason Fischbach, UW-Extension agricultural agent for Bayfield and Ashland Counties, and over a dozen regional Farm to School program participants.

First stop: the school garden.
